Just like every other part of your business, planning your online resources (or
departments) is essential for a smooth running and profitable business.
By creating a plan for your online infrastructure (i.e. hosting,
shopping carts, autoresponders etc) as a business owner you will
have more control over your online business, and be able to better
secure its assets.
Similar to a brick and mortar company, an online business has departments. For example
your shopping cart parallels your accounting department, and your autoresponder would be
similar to your marketing department. Each department has to function on its own, as well
as integrate smoothly with all other departments.
This online workshop was created for busy online entrepreneurs and will provide
business owners with the fundamental “do’s and don’ts” of
selecting, setting up, and maintaining their online departments.
You get …
… The knowledge to control your online business; identify the resources needed
for your current and future business growth; and determine which resources are best for
the unique needs of your business.
… The skills to assess your current and future business needs so you can work
toward building a strong and viable plan for your online departments.
… Over 8-hours of “must have” information and hands-on exercises,
which have been separated into small (2-hour) easy to complete segments that can be
accessed online 24-7.
And when finished, you will clearly understand about hosting accounts, shopping carts,
autoresponders, SEO strategies, information security, and web page optimization for high
search engines rankings, as well as a smooth running website.
For most people maintaining a smooth, efficient and automated online business is often
easier said than done.
If you feel frustrated or confused about your website, and all the options
available… or if you have invested time and money into online resources that just
aren’t working properly, then this 8-hour workshop will benefit you.
The workshop is divided into 4 sections. Here’s what each one will
contains…
1) What Makes a Good Hosting Company?
Your hosting account is the first step in planning your online infrastructure. It will
establish the ease and cost-effectiveness of any changes you make to your online
business, as it grows. And since every business is unique, before selecting a hosting
company you must analyze your current and future needs, and compare them to what each
hosting company offers.
It’s never wise to select a hosting company based on price alone and although
you may see some savings in the beginning, serious online businesses tend to quickly
outgrow these types of hosting companies, and it can be very costly and difficult to
switch from one to another when more features are required.
In the first 2-hours of your 8-hour workshop I will explain the good,
the bad, and the ugly options offered by the most popular hosting companies.
I’ll take you through a comparison checklist and help you analyze the strengths
and weaknesses of hosting companies, so you can determine which host best suites the
unique needs of your business.
You’ll learn to…
Avoid hosting companies that restrict the growth of your business
Recognize policies that dictate what you can and cannot do with your web pages
Control your own CGI scripts and SQL databases
Evaluate the help and support you’ll receive
Determine which hosts are using up-to-date technology
After completing this segment, you’ll be able to choose the hosting company that
will meet the unique needs of your online business - a hosting company where you can
easily move your web pages, have full control of your website, and get a compatible
interface so you can take advantage of new technologies that come into the
marketplace.
2) Secure and Protect Your Business Intelligence
Nowadays, most websites contain a great deal of proprietary intelligence and valuable
information. Yet most of information is still not safeguarded properly. As the owner of
an online business, you should realize that if your website files are not set up (or
protected) properly you could be a victim of sabotage and theft.
It’s best to control the amount of access you give your web people. Far too
often Webmasters get unlimited access to hosting accounts, email accounts and
downloadable revenue generating products (ebooks, webinars etc). This adds
unnecessary risk to a business.
Unless the proper controls are in place, if the relationship with your Webmaster were
to sour, they can do a fair bit of damage. In fact, I know of one business owner who got
all of his email accounts deleted, and another who was locked out of her own website,
because of a disgruntled webmaster.
I won’t get into too much detail now, but rarely should web people need full
access your information/data at the hosting account level (cpanel), when you can set them
up with a password at the FTP level. With the proper controls in place you can assign and
delete passwords and give them access to only the areas they will be modifying or
maintaining.
Plus, you’ll learn how to set up a back up strategy. It’s vital that you
make sure that your websites files are safe, secure and backed up. Whenever your
Webmaster makes a change you should have a defined backup policy in place. I’ll
show you how to create a policy that saves a copy of the old pages (for history sake).
Don’t rely on your Webmaster to do this for you. If for some reason you change
Webmasters, with an established policy you’ll maintain full control.
And last but not least, you learn how to protect the parts of your website that you
don’t want indexed by the search engines. For example, if you were selling an ebook
online, you certainly wouldn’t want that download page to be picked up by the
search engines. Otherwise you’re giving people a free backdoor pass to your
products, and kissing your revenue goodbye.
There are some pages that you just don’t want spiders to crawl. (ie images,
disclaimers, download pages, CGI-bin etc). And, you need to make sure these are set
up properly.
Don’t assume that your web design has done this for you. Even the most dedicated
Webmaster won’t understand the true impact that could occur if your ebooks,
newsletters, and your unique strategies were to be pirated.
In the second 2-hours of your 8-hour workshop I’ll teach you
about security and how to set up your FTP for maximum control, flexibility and
protection.
You’ll learn to…
Restrict the access given to your Webmaster (or stop them from accessing restricted
information and the ability to hold your business hostage).
Password-protect your accounts, so if you need to change Webmasters you can restrict
access or delete the old Webmaster’s account.
Control what directories and files your Webmaster can view and change.
Control access to the cpanel of your hosting account so you can authorize others to
make changes for you.
Plus, find out about Favicon.ico files and how they help cut way down on sever
errors and enhance product recognition and branding.
After completing this section, you will be able to set a policy of standardization, so
website files will be easy to find and cost-effective to update. And ensure that anyone
who has access to your online business will not pose a risk to your business.
3) Standardizing for Optimization and Added Control
Most online businesses are constantly evolving. And over time it’s possible that
more than one web person has a hand in its set-up or development.
For this reason it’s important for online business owner to set policies to
standardize their directories, files, file names etc.
With such policies in place, after a few quick instructions a new Webmaster can
quickly and easily take over where another has left off. Files will be easier to locate
and the business owner will be able to maintain better control of their business.
When you upload files to your hosting account it should be the business owner who
determines how to name and organize the website files. Otherwise, each person working on
your website may do it differently, as they prefer. Without a standardized file structure
you may end up with a variety of styles that can be a costly mess to sort out and
repair.
With a basic understanding of file structure and optimization techniques you will have
the knowledge to instruct anyone working on your website how you want your files
organized. And even if you plan on outsourcing some website maintenance you’ll have
the flexibility to hire any Webmaster you want, and reduce the time requirement (and
costs) since it will be quick and easy to maintain.
In the third 2-hours of your 8-hour workshop I’ll teach you
about file control and optimization. This section may sound complicated, but it
isn’t. I’ve included a lot of detail for those who want the specifics.
How to build and maintain modules:
Modules are small segments of web pages that are saved under a unique name. Each module
can be used in a variety of places and by changing the module you will simultaneously
changes all the pages contain that module. Which saves you time and money. By creating
web page modules, it becomes extremely easy to add, delete and make changes to sections
of your web pages.
Structuring JavaScript:
JavaScript is commonly used on web pages. Similar to
modules is contains small segments of a web page. An example of JavaScript would be a
web page where the current date appears on your web page. Without JavaScript you would
have to change the information manually each day, but with it the date is automatically
updated.
Setting up consistent and proper file naming strategies:
Learn the best structure to use for file types, so files can be found quickly and
easily. (i.e. with the image directory make a photo, banner, ads, etc)
Standardizing Audio and Video names:
If you learn to standardize your streaming audio, video, or .SWF files you can rename
them and make the files as small as possible, resolving bandwidth issues.
The 5 types of Redirects … and when to use them:
Redirecting your visitors can be a strategic, cost-effective advantage for every
business. But it’s equally important to properly clock some of your redirects to
protect your information and revenue. Here we’ll cover proper cloaking or tracking
features; the advantages of using meta tag redirect in you web page (which can also be
timed); about Htaccess redirects (there are several different kinds); hole site
redirects; and bout redirects for a sub-domain or to hide affiliate links
With a basic knowledge and a standardized way of doing things, you’ll make sure
that your website is easy to update. And if you need to change Webmasters, a new one can
easily find the right files and quickly make necessary updates. Saving you a fair bit of
money in the future.
4) Selecting, Setting up and Maintaining Your Online
Departments
For an online business there are many ecommerce options available, and although many
web designers or Webmasters will have an opinion on which they prefer in my opinion this
decision should fall squarely on the shoulders of the business owner.
A business owner needs to know the strengths and weaknesses of each and which option
is best option now, as well as for the future growth of their business.
Free resources sound good in theory, but most are complex to set up and maintain. And
since time is money, these so called free resources will end up costing you a lot more in
the future.
In the last 2-hours of your 8-hour workshop I’ll teach you
about a variety of ecommerce options, so you can effectively control and grow your
business.
As I said earlier, similar to a brick and mortar company, an online business has
departments. For example your shopping cart parallels your accounting department, and
your autoresponder would be similar to your marketing department. Each department has to
function on its own, as well as integrate smoothly with all other departments.
You’ll learn about…
Shopping Carts - Some shopping carts cover products, affiliates, ad
tracking, auto-responders, and digital downloads, whereas others do extremely well at
interfacing with the different payment systems and then securely downloading as many
digital products you want. We’ll discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Shopping
Carts so you can determine which shopping cart is best for you.
Autoresponders - Learn about the 4 different kinds of
auto-responders and the advantages/disadvantages of each one, so you can correspond with
your current and future customers. I’ll explain the limitations and drawbacks of
each type of autoresponder, so you’ll be able to pick an autoresponder that will
serve the needs of your business. Plus, I’ll give you some great options that you
may not be aware of.
MP3 to SWF Audio and Video Converters – You’ll learn
the fundamentals about converters and discover the disadvantages of certain types of
converters, and which ones converters work better than others.
When the right resources are selected everything will run smoothly and work more
efficiently. After completing this segment you will have a better understanding of your
options, and be able to pinpoint the resources that will be best for you.
